The Oceanic Cataclysm That Carved the Realm

The air along the borders of the Zaleeshee carries the bitter tang of sea salt, damp loam, and ancient copper. Far to the south of the misty waterways, where the valley relents to the jagged, snow-dusted teeth of the southern peaks, stands a monument carved directly from the bone of the world: Minato’s Watch.

Towering hundreds of feet into the overcast sky, this colossal granite sentinel serves as a stark, silent reminder of a time before memories faded—an era when the ocean split open, eldritch madness breached the deep, and a father’s grief saved humanity from total annihilation.

The Cataclysm at Koo-I: Riku Minato and the Birth of The Froth

Long ago, before the memory of our great-grandfathers took root, the realm was whole. On the island of Koo-I—a former paradise of emerald mountains and pristine white sand—a humble fisherman named Riku Minato knew the coastal shallows like his own calloused hands.

On a day marked by fate, Riku cast his nets into the calm sea. Without warning, the ocean parted violently:

  • A towering column of absolute darkness erupted from the ocean floor.
  • Torrents of pressurized sea water crashed skyward, shaking the realm with a force that rattled stone to its core.
  • The calm bay collapsed into a churning, violent maelstrom of black water and eldritch energy—The Froth was born.

“When the chaos subsided, Minato beheld not serene waters but a churning
maelstrom where tranquility once reigned. Thus, was born the Froth.”
— Groff, Elder Traveler

From the churning maw of the Froth emerged grotesque abominations. These frothbeasts—spawn of the eldritch entity Akzha’thyul—were horrific amalgams of pulsing grey flesh, oozing pustules, and circular mouths packed with needle-sharp teeth. They moved with unnatural, predatory grace, unleashing terror across Koo-I and leaving butchery and madness in their wake.

Riku Minato rallied the surviving fishermen and farmers into a desperate militia. Armed with makeshift spears and driven by sheer survival, they fought valiantly against the encroaching nightmare. But the island could not withstand the endless assault. In the final, bloody collapse of Koo-I’s defenses, Riku Minato was slaughtered.

The Suicide Run of the Iron Beast: Ai Minato’s Retribution

Word of Riku’s death reached his father, Ai Minato, on a neighboring island. A veteran sailor and hardened warrior, Ai was consumed by a blinding fury that burned hotter than the forge. Driven by retribution, Ai summoned his oldest shield-brothers.

Under a moonless sky, Ai and his crew committed an act of audacious treason: they seized a massive iron warship from the harbor fortress of their people’s Oceanguard. Larger than any merchant vessel, this formidable beast of iron bristled with heavy metal tubes designed to breathe fire and smoke.

Slicing through roiling waves and unnatural darkness, Ai stood at the bow as the ship plowed directly into the heart of the Froth. As the monstrosities swarmed the hull, Ai ordered the total detonation of the warship’s magazine and fire-tubes.

The resulting cataclysmic explosion obliterated the island of Koo-I, momentarily carving a giant dry bowl into the ocean floor and incinerating the Froth. Through Ai Minato’s absolute sacrifice, the plague of frothbeasts was driven back into the abyss, saving the known world.

Anatomy of Minato’s Watch

To immortalize the father and son who saved humanity, the Ututhi people carved a permanent sentinel directly into the granite walls of the southern mountains.

The Granite Shield: Rising over 500 feet from the stone, the shield’s surface is pitted and scarred by eons of wind, rain, and ice. Swirling, intricate engravings across its metallic-sheened face tell the history of the naval sacrifice.

The Sky-Sword: Rising from behind the shield, a colossal granite blade thrusts upward, its massive hilt bent at a right angle, pointing defiantly into the clouds.

The High Observation Deck: At the summit of the sword’s hilt sits a watch platform. In ancient times, guardians utilized massive, spectacle-like crystal lenses mounted on the deck to scan the distant western horizons for the return of the Froth. Today, as the ancient barriers fail, the roiling dark waters can be seen from the platform with the naked eye

The Sacred Cave of The Pact

Minato’s Watch is more than a memorial; it is the physical foundation of peace in the Scarred Realm. Deep beneath the feet of the monument lies the Sacred Cave, where the leaders of all surviving species once gathered during the Great Darkness to forge The Pact:

TRIBE / RACESACRED OFFERING SEALED IN THE CAVE
The CresLock of hair from their wisest elder
The HurricaneFeather from their swiftest falcon
The LouotoFang from their fiercest wolf-warrior
The BunmanshinGemstone from their highest mountain temple
The NosvartusDrop of blood from their most ancient ancestor

These five offerings were bound and sealed together beneath the stone feet of Minato’s Watch to enforce non-encroachment and land borders. But as the witch Endra tore away the Mother’s Tear and the Sunstone, the ancient wards have fractured. The frothbeasts walk the daylight once more, and the shadows around Minato’s Watch grow cold and hungry.
